Borrowing

How long?

Books in the Short-Loan Collection may be borrowed for five days with the possibility of renewal if the item has not been requested by another reader. These books can be renewed for three further periods or until requested by another reader.

Normal Loan books and theses may be borrowed for three weeks and can be renewed three times or until requested by another reader.

Journals may not be borrowed

Mechanics of borrowing

Readers can either use the self-issue machine available to record transactions or ask one of the staff to check a book out for them.

Note: the self-issue machine can only scan barcodes. This means (1) it cannot deal with typed messages and (2) it is not connected directly to OLIS, which means there is always a time lag between borrowing the book and its change of status on OLIS. This means (1) you should never use the keyboard and (2) books may seem to be "available" when they are not, especially right after the weekend.

Returning items borrowed

If a member of staff is present give the book to them. If the Office is closed please deposit the returned items through the letterbox by the Office door.
