My research interests lie in the area of knowledge representation and reasoning and more specifically, Description Logics, Ontology languages such as OWL, and automated reasoning. The specific topics of my research have been quite diverse the last years. In the current days I work on the topic of automatic evaluation and benchmarking of Description Logic reasoners and query answering systems. More precisely, I intend to design and develop methods for automatically generating ontologies for the purposes of evaluation.
Nevertheless, in my PhD I worked on the problem of developing formal methods for representing and reasoning with fuzzy knowledge. Consequently, I proposed fuzzy extensions of several Description Logics, notably a fuzzy extension of OWL (f-OWL), and also developed a number of tableaux reasoning algorithms for such logics. Some parts of these algorithms have been implemented in the FiRE fuzzy reasoner and in the ONTOSEARCH2 system. Additionally, I have also tried with other colleagues to apply such algorithms for the task of knowledge-based image analysis and segmentation. Last but not least I have also worked in the area of knowledge interoperability and ontology alignment, where I have proposed a new String Similarity method, called Iterative-SubString (I-Sub), which has been integrated in several popular Ontology Alignment and Schema Matching Systems.
Before coming to Oxford, I worked as a Research Assistant in the Image, Video and Multimedia Laboratory, Electrical and Computer Engineering, National and Technical University of Athens, where I also obtained my PhD under the joint supervision of Prof. Stefanos Kollias and Lecturer Giorgos Stamou. During my stay there I had the opportunity to work in a number of EU funded research projects, like the IP project X-Media, STREP project BOEMIE for which I also acted as a WP leader and NoE projects Knowledge Web and K-Space.
In 2008 I received the Chorafas Institute prize, in recognition of innovative and broad research work at the National and Technical University of Athens.
In my younger days I used to play tennis at a professional level. Those days I used to be a member of the Greek national team under the 18 and played in many European championships, where I had the opportunity to meet and play with people that are now competing in Grand Slams. In 1998 we managed to come 8th at the European Team Championship 18U/Edmond de Galea Cup. I recently also jointed the Blues tennis team of the University of Oxford.
