Local information

The 56th meeting of IFIP WG2.1 will take place from September 10-14, 2001 on the island of Ameland, The Netherlands. We will meet in d'Amelander Kaap. The local organizer is Johan Jeuring.

Getting there

Fly in to Amsterdam (Schiphol). Don't rent a car: you don't need it on the island, and bringing it is expensive. Public transport to the ferry is reliable and fast. There is a train station right at the airport. There (or at any other Dutch railway station) you can buy a special ticket that will bring you all the way to the meeting site.  It is also valid for the return trip. At the ticket window, just ask for a "Waddenbiljet Ameland". (Maybe it is easier to write the name of the ticket down and show it to the ticket seller instead of trying to pronounce it.) This ticket costs NLG 32.75, plus the price of the return ticket to Leeuwarden (approximately NLG 50).

For some time tables, consult: example trips.

From Schiphol you take the train to Leeuwarden. This trip takes about 2.5 hours. (You may wish to bring something to read.)

From Leeuwarden you take the bus (nr 66) to Holwerd. This trip takes about three quarters. If you want to find the departure and arrival times on the bus site, select "Reisadvies". Fill out (Plaats) "Leeuwarden" (Straat) "busstation", (Plaats) "Holwerd" (Straat) "haven/veerdam", and the desired departure date/time. I will put some example schedules for the Sunday here later.

From Holwerd you take the ferry to Ameland. Note that the last ferry leaves on 19:30 on Sunday (21:30 on Saturday). So if you arrive on Schiphol after 15:15, it is probably impossible to reach the ferry to the island in time.

From Ameland (Nes) you take the bus (nr 130) or a taxi to Hollum (d'Amelander Kaap). There will be a bus waiting when you arrive with the ferry. Get off at d'Amelander Kaap.

If you come by train (from France, Belgium, Germany) instead of plane, buy a train ticket to Leeuwarden, and from there take the same route as described above.

If you come by car, drive to Holwerd, leave your car behind there, and take the ferry.
