AIR PUMP designed by his assistant
ROBERT HOOKE
Inventor Scientist and Architect

who made a MICROSCOPE
and thereby first identified
the LIVING CELL



Inscription by Edmund J. Bowen, FRS (1898-1980), a former Fellow and Paelector in Chemistry at Univ. (1922-1965), on a stone plaque inlaid into the wall of what is now Shelley's Memorial at University College in the High Street, Oxford. The photograph of the plaque above includes Dr. Bowen's great granddaughters, Alice and Emma, and his grandson, Jonathan Bowen.
